Isla Mujeres boasts a rich Mayan cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. The aim of this project was to honor ancient traditions while creating spaces that feel contemporary and modern. The result is a striking collection that showcases local craftsmanship, reimagining timeless customs and materials through the eyes and hands of skilled Mexican artisans.
ANCESTRAL MATERIALS MEET MODERN TECHNIQUES
At the heart of the Almare collection is a deep connection to indigenous materials presented in a fresh, creative way. Take the original frames made from parota wood — a species native to Mexico's tropical regions — and the textiles handcrafted from raw cotton, a material that the Mayan civilizations used in everyday life. Each piece draws attention in its own right, while paying homage to the island's ancestral culture.
Alejandra Zermeño drew upon the sacred role of bees in Mayan culture; bees are seen as powerful symbols of spiritual significance. In this artwork, intricate beehive structures appear alongside elements inspired by pre-Hispanic ceramic drawings, creating three-dimensional depth and dimension. Meanwhile, MX Atelier's handmade macramé adds a sense of comfort and warmth, calling back to the traditional palm-leaf roofing used in Mayan homes.
Inspired by the rich history of Mexico and the legacy of the Mayan civilization, the artworks showcase the unique techniques and exquisite craftsmanship of Mexican artists. Together, the collection narrates the story of a traveler who, over the course of a journey across the country, has gathered artworks that reflect the region’s artistic diversity—revealing a tapestry of local materials, mediums, and techniques.
