Establishing a Narrative

As a telecommunications leader, Charter understands the importance of connectivity and local representation.

To highlight these themes, the curators ventured into the heart of each state that Charter serves, engaging with local artists to capture the spirit of their state.

Each floor of the building features a bespoke art collection from local artists of that state, whose authenticity and craft transformed the headquarters into a vibrant gallery of stories and perspectives.

The two executives floors, perched atop the building, were inspired by the body of water they overlook - the Long Island Sound.

Artwork Highlights
State by state curation

Minnesota

Artist Name
Neal Peterson
Artwork Title
Kaleidoscopic Cities
Medium
Photo Collage on Metal

Rather than presenting a traditional, flat landscape, the artist ingeniously spins and layers the cityscape view in this metallic print, crafting a mandala-like effect that captures the essence of Milwaukee.

Artwork Highlights
State by state curation

Ohio

Artist Name
Andrea Myers
Artwork Title
Skies Tides
Medium
Hand Dyed Fabric

Andrea Myers creates machine-sewn textile collages using hand-dyed fabric. She draws inspiration from influences such as color field painting and quilting. Committed to only sourcing materials locally, Myers' geometric aesthetic transcends the fabric’s original utility. "Skies Tides," in particular, introduces a nuanced textural dimension to its surroundings, paying homage to the historical significance of early American quilting while offering a contemporary interpretation.

Artwork Highlights
State by state curation

Texas

Artist Name
Ellen Bruxvoort
Artwork Title
Silhouettes
Medium
Wrapped Organic Cotton

These custom wrapped fiber pieces take inspiration from the artist's home. Contours of Texas' landscapes, sunsets, bluebonnets, cacti and the Colorado River bends inform the design of this work. The pieces are wrapped with naturally dyed American wool, hemp, cotton and silk and accented with natural color rope - a nod to the 5 million acres of farmland across Texas.

Artwork Highlights
State by state curation

North Carolina

Artist Name
Kristin Gibson
Artwork Title
Duke Gardens Lotus
Medium
Oil on Canvas

The curators envisioned finding an existing oil painting that would add a classical touch to the space. They contacted North Carolina artist Kristen Gibson, who serendipitously had an unstretched plein-air painting inspired by the Duke Gardens, a well-known attraction near Raleigh, known for its display of local plants and wildlife, which perfectly reflected the natural beauty of the state.

State by state curation

Florida

Artist Name
Ari Robinson
Artwork Title
Ocean Breeze
Medium
Paper on glass and resin

This installation was inspired by the Sunshine State. The color and pattern inspiration were pulled from the state’s blue ocean waters, green grasses, and subtle warm touches from the golden sun. Each piece is made out of collaged paintings on paper that are coated with resin on wood.

Curator’s Insight

Crafting a distinct art collection for each floor, inspired by a different state, presented a unique challenge, requiring the curatorial expertise to embrace diverse subjects, palettes, and mediums while also ensuring a cohesive aesthetic across the entire space.

Artwork Highlights
Long Island Sound

The buildings sit atop the Long Island Sound, so a special collection, inspired by the Sound, was curated for the executive floors.

Artist Name
Brocoloco
Artwork Title
Woven panels
Medium
100% natural American cotton

The rope commissions by artist duo Brocoloco evoked a nautical connection that harmonized beautifully with the panoramic views of the Long Island Sound. At the same time, the pieces provided sound dampening in the space and an added touch of softness to the long hallway with its many doors.

Artist Name
Catherine Cristiano
Artwork Title
Landscapes
Medium
Photograph on Matte Paper

A series of pieces by local artist Catherine Cristiano portray familiar local homes under different lighting conditions throughout the day. By combining several of her postcard-sized artworks into a single, large display and framing them individually with small mats, the presentation gained a dynamic quality. This method elevated the collective impact of the landscapes, making them significantly more engaging than they would have been as standalone pieces.

Client Insight

The depth of storytelling and the sheer variety of styles and mediums have turned our workspace into a place of discovery and inspiration that our employees get to enjoy throughout the entirety of our new headquarters building.

What stood out for us was the complexity and attention to detail in the curatorial process. Indiewalls' ability to understand our brand, interpret our requests, and translate that into an art narrative was remarkable.

Indiewalls didn’t just provide us with art; their curators worked diligently to find local artists from across the country that authentically represented the local flavor of the area in support of the brand concept.

Their project management capabilities, from concept development to production to installation, were impeccable and seamless and the staff a joy to work with!

Artist STORIES
Robert Winkler

Robert Winkler is known for his unique approach to metalwork, transforming recycled materials into thought-provoking sculptures that offer new views from every angle, challenging the viewer's perception of space and form.

Winkler's sculpture not only aligns aesthetically with the lobby's architecture but also embodies the essence of Charter's work in an abstract, artistic form. It provides a visual metaphor for connectivity and communication, making it a fitting and authentic addition to the space that complements both the brand's identity and the architectural design of the building.

Artist STORIES
Brandon Petryowski

Throughout the art curation process, a variety of options were considered for the main lobby, requiring in-depth discussions with the client on-site. A diverse range of materials, styles, and methods of installation were explored, questioning how to best utilize the large marble walls and the expansive open areas of the space.

The metal sculptures from Petryowski - himself a descendent of legendary metalworkers - rise from the ground, offering both a sense of structure and fluidity, effectively tying the space together.

Artist STORIES
DE Studio

As part of HLW’s interior design work, each floor was assigned a different shade of color in the blue and green family, which assisted with visual wayfinding between the floors. For each floor, Sara Beckley and Laura Else - an artist-sister duo - were commissioned to create dip-dyed wood pieces of shades of color correlating with the floor, an innovative use of fine art to advance the environmental graphics in the workspace.

executive Insight

The sheer scale of the project, which amounted to hundreds of artworks across 800,000 square feet - all during the height of Covid, no less - required a remarkable amount of organization and coordination. We found fantastic partners in HLW and JLL.
